While we were living in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., my wife and I took a trip to Alaska and fell in love with the state and its people. We decided to spend our summers in Anchorage, planning to return to Florida for the winters, thus becoming the ultimate snowbirds. However, about halfway through our first summer in The Great Land, we decided to stay for good and are now year-round residents of the 49th state. Oh, and we lived happily ever after. The End. Or maybe just The Beginning.

© 2010 Hurricane Dave (BMI) Floridians on a two-week vacation To a place that wasn’t as hot Charmed and amazed by Alaska They came back just for the summer, they thought But soon their surroundings seduced them Like a bear in a snare they were caught Yes they found their soul mate Was the 49th state And Fort Lauderdale they soon forgot. So dance with the wide-eyed Cheechakos Alaska’s the home they hold dear They work and they play There’s adventure each day As they waltz through the Last Frontier Yes dance with the wide-eyed Cheechakos Their dance card is always full here A crazy man and his wife Carving out a new life As they waltz through the Last Frontier. They stare at the critters in their backyard And marvel at giant zucchinis They watch ice hockey instead of baseball Traded hotdogs for reindeer weenies They’re learning to fillet a salmon And someday they’ll field-dress a moose They’ll ski through the snow When it’s 20 below And collect gold nuggets from a sluice So dance with the wide-eyed Cheechakos Alaska’s the home they hold dear They work and they play There’s adventure each day As they waltz through the Last Frontier Yes dance with the wide-eyed Cheechakos Their dance card is always full here A crazy man and his wife Carving out a new life As they waltz through the Last Frontier. Kinfolk and friends cannot fathom Why would they move so far from home? But they’ve never seen the aurora Or watched mushers leave Willow for Nome Where wonderful, interesting people Welcome and help them each day From Homer to Tok They’ll never go broke It’s a concept that’s tough to convey. A crazy man and his wife Carving out a new life As they waltz through the Last Frontier.
