From the recording Please Don't Ask Me About Her

First of all, this is NOT a political song, so don't even go there. After Sen. John McCain picked his running mate in 2008, everyone I encountered outside Alaska stopped asking about glaciers, bears, salmon, cold weather, etc. All they wanted to know about was she-who-must-not-be-named. Then when "she" quit her job in the summer of 2009, I decided there had to be a country song in there somewhere. So what we have here is a simple song about a love affair gone bad. Really, it's not political. When I play this song at my gigs around the state, it resonates strongly with many Alaskans who, frankly, have had quite enough of "her." (And by the way, I can see "her" from my house.)

Outsiders are curious about my state
Alaska’s mountains and its glaciers and the food upon my plate
But their first question tends to grate on my last nerve
They always ask me about her.

She left me in the middle of our song
Now all my friends down South are asking what could have gone wrong.
The thought of breakin’ up seemed so absurd
So please don’t ask me about her.

You can ask me about the midnight sun
That glows in summertime
Or the northern lights of winter
Whose ribbons blow my mind
You can ask me about the Iditarod
Or the Rendezvous of Fur
But please don’t ask me about her.

When she said she loved me it was just a trick
When she winked at them I realized she was no maverick
We’d gaze across at Russia and make up words
Oh please don’t ask me about her.

Our love was a bridge to nowhere, so it seems
When she said, “Thanks but no thanks, baby,” she froze out all my dreams
“Going rogue,” she said, and flew off like a bird
Oh please don’t ask me about her.

You can ask me why Denali
Likes to hide behind the clouds
Or why those drive-in espresso stands
Always draw a crowd
You can ask me about how cold it gets
In the middle of winter
But please don’t ask me about her.

Oh I still recall how sexy
She looked in chest waders
Oh please don’t ask me about her.
You betcha
Oh please don’t ask me about her.
