  1. Thank You

From the recording Thank You

With all the goofy songs on this CD, here's a serious one for balance. After spending some time on the road with me and experiencing the wonders of the Alaskan scenery, a good friend whom I had never heard express anything remotely religious asked, "How can you see all of this and not believe in God?" That said it all for me, and I tried to put my appreciation in this song.

The moose walk the streets of Anchorage and wander the wilderness
With caribou and Dall sheep and porcupines in a land so richly blessed
In the gray silt waters of Turnagain Arm a beluga spout appears
I say thank you God for putting that there, thank you God for putting that there

The morning sun over Hatcher Pass, where berries coat the slopes
The musk ox graze in the predawn haze in a land of dreams and hopes
Driving the Al-Can Highway, you might see a fox or bear
I say thank you God for putting that there, thank you God for putting that there

If you don’t believe in a deity
Come spend a day or two with me
You won’t believe the sights you’ll see

Tracing the paths of prospectors on the White Pass & Yukon Rail
Touching the face of a glacier or spotting a humpback whale
Rafting down the Nenana and breathing that crisp mountain air
I say thank you God for putting that there, thank you God for putting that there

From the summer bustle of Fairbanks to the snowbanks of Valdez
From Delta Junction to Dutch Harbor and Kodiak’s cool breeze
From Skagway to Cantwell to Barrow and out to Palmer for the State Fair
I say thank you God for putting that there, thank you God for putting that there

If you don’t believe in a deity
Come spend a day or two with me
You won’t believe the sights you’ll see

I don’t believe those mountains sprang out of nowhere
To me it is no mystery why nothing can compare
So thank you for this masterpiece they call the Last Frontier
Yes, thank you God for putting that there, thank you God for putting that there.

We know who led us to this place, so we’ll offer up this prayer
Thank you God for putting us there, thank you God for putting us there,
For putting these two Cheechakos there.
