I wanted to write something about the incredible aurora borealis, the Northern Lights that dance in the sky over Alaska. But the subject has been covered so well by other artists -- including Talkeetna's Ester Golton, who devoted an entire album to the phenomenon. So I opted instead for a cheesy play on words and a tale of alien abduction on a dark Alaskan winter night.

She was on her way north from Ketchikan
After working all summer at a souvenir stand
It was time to get back to the Slope and her job with BP
She took the ferry to Whittier then drove to Fairbanks
Stopped at Tesoro to top off her tank
Alice couldn’t know what she was about to see.

That’s the night the aurora borrowed Alice
That’s the night they drew her up to the sky
Not the sort of thing that happens in Denver or Dallas
’Cause the Northern Lights play tricks upon your eyes.

Alice drove on to the hard gravel road
That leads to her Arctic winter abode
When suddenly lights started dancing wildly above
There were streaks of green and white and red
Then she noticed a huge disc above her head
And realized something was wrong so she put on her gloves

That’s the night the aurora borrowed Alice
That’s the night they drew her up to the sky
Not the sort of thing that happens in Denver or Dallas
’Cause the Northern Lights play tricks upon your eyes.

She parked the truck and stepped outside
Poor Alice was about to go for a ride
In a vessel that wasn’t like anything she’d ever seen
A bright beam of light shot down from the disc
And into the saucer sweet Alice was whisked
And greeted by two dozen tiny men who were green.

Well they painted her nails and tickled her toes
Put some feathers on her head and powdered her nose
Took a few pictures and dropped her back by her truck.

When Alice awoke she could not recall
The spaceship or the green men who weren’t tall
But wondered why she had the urge to quack like a duck.
And that’s a strange tale that often is told
On dark scary nights up here in the cold
Now and then there are crazy spacemen running amok.

That’s the night the aurora borrowed Alice
That’s the night they drew her up to the sky
Not the sort of thing that happens in Denver or Dallas
’Cause the Northern Lights play tricks upon your eyes.
Yeah, yeah, yeah
That’s the night the aurora borrowed Alice
That’s the night they drew her up to the sky
Not the sort of thing that happens in Denver or Dallas
’Cause the Northern Lights play tricks upon your eyes.

Goodnight, Alice.
